Increased CDMA Device Variety

  • Provide subscribers with a larger variety of feature-rich, data-enabled CDMA mobile devices.
  • Capture the high-value CDMA upgrade subscriber, with a variety of high-end mobile devices, more data services and applications.

Improved Time-to-Market

  • Standardized specifications and industry-approved test plans eliminate the need for additional operator-specific testing of mobile devices.
  • Reduce time-to-market, with direct purchase of OMH devices or bundling of OMH devices with operator-specific value-added services.
  • Introduce OMH-accepted mobile devices in the market, with confidence and peace of mind.

Enhanced Data Services

  • OMH SIM cards give operators flexibility in offering and managing customized data services on open market mobile devices.
  • Operators can differentiate their service offerings, manage applications, and offer Value-Added Service (VAS) bundles via their OMH SIM cards.

Reduced Costs

  • Standardization, and the introduction of complementary distribution channels, can help operators reduce the costs associated with inventory, device testing, and customer support.

Network Configuration Information

The Product Resource Information (PRI) is a list of operator-specific system settings that are programmed into the OMH SIM card, rather than in the nonvolatile memory of the mobile device. A PRI guidelines document is available to answer operator questions about PRI parameters (CDG 169).

Network Specification Documents

Prior to seeking OMH readiness status from the CDG Testing and Acceptance Group (TAG), the operator's network must conform to the following specifications: CDG 166 (OMH SIM Card Specification), CDG 197 (OMH Network Specification), CDG 173 (OMH Minimum Network Test Plan), and CDG 174 (OMH Minimum Network Test Results).

OMH SIM Card Documents

CDG 166 and 3GPP2 C.S0023‑D specify OMH SIM card requirements. Submission of CDG 174 (Network Validation Test Results) to the CDG Testing and Acceptance Group (TAG) is based on results obtained using commercial samples of OMH SIM cards using operator PRI.

An OMH-compliant network is one that has been accepted by the CDG OMH Special Interest Group’s Test Requirements and Acceptance Group (TAG) as having demonstrated harmonized implementation of Voice, SMS, 1x data, EV-DO data, WAP Browser, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Java, Brew®, and Location Based Services (LBS).

The following steps outline the high-level process for becoming OMH-compliant. To obtain Qualcomm support, visit this page.

Open Market Handsets (OMH) is a CDG industry initiative focused on expanding access to a variety of CDMA handsets through open handset distribution. This open access is achieved through independence of OMH devices from operator-specific provisioning.

  • An OMH device operates seamlessly on any CDMA OMH operator network, including full subscription portability for voice, SMS, 1x data, EV-DO data, WAP, MMS, BREW, Java, and Location Based Services.
  • An OMH device exhibits proven quality, performance, and interoperability. One-time standards-based testing provides device certification for all OMH operators and markets.

Many Qualcomm chipsets support Open Market Handset features.
