India is the second largest CDMA market in the world with over 110 million CDMA subscribers and two of the top five largest CDMA2000 operators in the world. All Indian CDMA operators have launched EVDO Rev A-based mobile broadband services, starting with dongles and expanding to handsets. The EVDO mobile broadband services launched by Reliance, Tata, MTS, and Virgin Mobile have been a great success with the EVDO footprint expanding to 100 towns. All five Indian CDMA operators have launched OMH and currently distribute OMH SIMs in the market.
India was the launch market for OMH. In August 2009, Samsung announced the world’s first OMH handset, Samsung MPower. OMH is gaining traction in India with commercial handsets already available from Samsung, Micromax, and Huawei. Those device manufacturers, and others, are expected to launch more than 25 OMH handsets in 2010. Demand for OMH handsets continues to grow at a rapid pace across all device tiers, from feature phones to smart phones. All five Indian CDMA Operators have launched OMH and currently distribute OMH SIMs in the market.

"Customers seek a variety of handset options. The Open Market Handsets' (OMH) initiative supports our efforts to offer customers a greater flexibility in selection of devices, at relatively lower costs and increased touch points. OMH creates a 'level playing field' for the CDMA ecosystem and opens opportunities for all operators, OEMs and channel partners who are expanding CDMA in India, one of the fastest growing telecom industries of the world." – Mr. Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Teleservices Ltd. India.
"Indian consumers want more variety of handsets and convenience to change or upgrade handsets. The Open Market Handsets' (OMH) initiative enables choice for consumers and the flexibility to easily upgrade. Reliance fully supports OMH, which is a win-win for the entire ecosystem and end-consumers." – Mr. Vrajesh Shelat, Mobile Devices Group, Reliance Communications (India)
“We welcome this technology as it gives them the much wanted freedom and quality. It will also intensify competition, so the consumer will ultimately benefit,” says Vsevolod Rozanov, president & CEO, SSTL (MTS).
